FAQs

  • What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy that aligns the body in order to facilitate health so that the self-healing and self-regulating systems can function properly. The goal of treatment is to restore balance to the structural integrity of the body so that any obstructions of neurovascular flow or restriction of any tissue becomes relieved.

It is our understanding that structural imbalances are the cause of disease in the body. Through principles-based assessment and treatment, the cause of the problem may be sorted our to restore optimal functionality in affected tissues.

By using hands-on treatment, the practitioner uses the patients own body by moving it through gentle, yet effective motions with corrective forces in order to remove any restrictions, obstructions, or asymmetries.

  • Is Osteopathy right for me?

Osteopathy is a therapy that assists everyone that is suffering from an acute or chronic condition. From low back pain to gastrointestinal issues, osteopathy's principles based approach to realigning the body to promote its ability to heal itself and finding the root of the cause can result in a positive outcome for any case.

  • What do I bring to treatment?

It is highly recommended that the patient wears loose fitting, comfortable clothing to the clinic (e.g. athletic clothing). Any tight clothing (e.g. jeans) can inhibit assessment and therefore affect treatment. My rule of thumb for this is if it restricts general motion then it’s unsuitable for treatment.

For anyone with long hair, a mid-high bun is preferred. Some jewelry and accessories such as watches, earrings and large necklaces are recommended to be removed as well.

  • My ___ hurts, why didn't you treat it?

In principle based osteopathy, we understand collective mechanics of anatomy and how the body in interrelated is its function. Even though the treatment may have not come into direct contact with the subjective area, the purpose of the treatment was aimed to restore function in that area.

  • Why was my treatment different from last time?

Every treatment is specific to what is happening to the patient that day. There are no “treatment plans” and the treatment is based off how the body is presenting that day. If in a previous treatment a certain area was targeted, the next treatment another issue may have arisen or exposed itself. The end goal remains the same and that is to give the patient a healthy and mobile lifestyle.

  • What should I expect post-treatment?

When treatment is applied to the body, the structural changes must settle within the body. This means that the body had imbalances that were being compensated for, and now with treatment it must adjust to it’s “new normal” positioning. It is very common to feel muscle soreness or some minor physiological changes due to treatment in the following days as the body takes on the treatment.
